The New York Cosmos is a 2010 revival of the original New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Based in New York City, the Cosmos longterm goal is to field a team in Major League Soccer

On August 1, 2010, Pelé - original Cosmos player and Honorary President of Paul Kemsley's ownership group - announced the return of the New York Cosmos. Prior to this announcement, there had been frequent attempts to revive the club. With the rise of MLS, negotiations had taken place between various New York area entities – including past and present owners of the New York Red Bulls – and former NASL Cosmos general manager G. Peppe Pinton, owner of the Cosmos name.[2][3] Originally Pinton declined to give them use of the name, believing MLS was not receptive to reviving or respecting the historical significance of the New York Cosmos.[4] However, after seeing the revival of the Seattle Sounders, he saw MLS as a league that is prepared to welcome the NASL's legacy.[5] The Daily Mail reported on August 29, 2009 that Kemsley, former Tottenham Hotspur Vice-Chairman, had purchased the team's name and image rights from Pinton.[6]

Joining Chairman Kemsley and CEO Carl Johnson are individuals with Premier League management experience including Terry Byrne as Director of Football[7] and former Liverpool CEO Rick Parry as a board member.[8] According to Byrne, the group has had several positive conversations with MLS Commissioner Don Garber as they aim to become the league's 20th franchise.

To kick start their MLS ambitions, the Cosmos have partnered with youth clubs BW Gottschee (Queens, NY) and Los Angeles Futbol Club to create Cosmos Academy (East) and Cosmos Academy (West).[10] Led by Giovanni Savarese and Ted Chronopoulos respectively, the youth clubs will compete at various levels of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Unfortunately, some parents have filed complaints because the merge with Gottschee caused some developmental teams to be cancelled.
